AI, Media, and Authoritarian Drift
Why preserving human dimensionality is the central design challenge
Across contemporary AI and digital media ecosystems, a consistent pattern is emerging: systems optimized for scale, speed, and influence increasingly shape how humans perceive reality, relate to one another, and organize institutions. This pattern does not require malicious intent. It arises from the interaction between linear optimization pressures and nonlinear human cognition.
Recent research across AI governance, social epistemology, organizational evolution, and neuroscience converges on a critical insight:
When socio-technical systems privilege linear variables, they systematically suppress higher-dimensional human capacities required for democratic resilience, ethical reasoning, and collective intelligence.
This suppression creates fertile conditions for authoritarian dynamics.
1. How AI and media environments collapse human dimensionality
Drawing from AI governance (Bruschi & Diomede; Çetin et al.; Nichols et al.), institutional evolution (Wilson & Snower; Zhong et al.), and misinformation research (Kirmayer; Collins; Hadgu et al.), we can identify a shared mechanism:
AI systems preferentially amplify variables that are:
scalar (rankable, optimizable)
fast (real-time feedback)
context-light (low historical memory)
extractive (value captured externally)
isolating (individualized targeting)
These variables map directly onto authoritarian affordances:
speed → reaction over reflection
control → compliance over care
extraction → depletion over reciprocity
isolation → fragmentation over solidarity
This does not imply AI causes authoritarianism. Rather, AI accelerates selection pressures that favor dominance hierarchies and coercive coordination when left unbuffered by nonlinear human capacities.
Hendrycks’ evolutionary framing (“Natural Selection Favors AIs over Humans”) and Zhong et al.’s entropy-based models of institutional evolution both underscore the same risk: systems that adapt faster than humans can integrate meaning will outcompete human governance unless deliberately constrained.
2. Nonlinearity is the missing literacy
What most policy and ethics frameworks under-theorize is nonlinearity.
Research on causal emergence (Hoel et al.; Jansma & Hoel) shows that:
higher-level organization can possess more causal power than micro-level optimization
but only when systems preserve coherence across scales

When media and AI environments push humans into chronic stress, speed, and simplification:
perceptual bandwidth narrows

This is a neurobiological effect, not a moral failure.

5. Implications for academia and work organizations

6. The opportunity
The opportunity is not to “fix AI” in isolation.
It is to co-evolve socio-technical systems that:

resist dimensional collapse under informational pressure
support prosocial coordination without coercion

Together, they shift AI literacy from tool use to environmental awareness.
Authoritarian systems do not merely restrict freedom; they collapse dimensionality. Designing AI-mediated environments that preserve human integration, care, reciprocity, and relationality is therefore not a moral preference—it is a structural requirement for collective intelligence.
